Amber: The Next Generation
An Aztec-like shadow loosely connected with the golden circle.
The (prince) is ritually sacrificed in the coronation ceremony, only to come back to life three days later.
One’s still-beating heart is cut out, and replaced with an engraved black magical stone. If strong enough to survive this process and accept the stone’s power (with its lines of control), one would become the new Sun-Prince of Texiban.
Following the death of the prince, Texiban would go to war, trying to find the strongest warrior worthy to become prince, and strong enough to survive the process. This is known as a “flower war”.
There is speculation in the Begman court that the same king has ruled for centuries, taking a new body each time.
Unfortunately, the (crown prince) fell to an assassin’s blade on the streets of Begma.
Amber plotted to avert a flower war by replacing the dead prince before three days were up. However somebody else got there first and did the same thing (having the luxury of time to prepare in advance of the assassination)
